Another Sportscar

Being nosey - but what year ALFA? I bought, in early 1964, a 1961 white ALFA Guiletta Spyder which was my first car.....

I had a white '60 Spider. Drum brakes. An axle failed and I sold the car cheaply (dumb move!). I think it had a Lucas distributor.

By the way, I agree that the MGB is the longest running sports car model (though I've never owned one).

The MGB is no longer the best selling sports car of all time. It was until the late 90's when the Miata took over that particular honor.

Oh that's certainly true in terms of sales numbers...but the MGB had a longer actual run in terms of years (16 if I'm counting right). Miata has 14 years and counting if you see the first cars as 1990 models (they came out in 1989). At any rate, the basic frame and body on the MGB didn't really change much during its run. My M2 Miata doesn't share any body parts with an M1 model.
As I was thinking about this, it also occured to me that Spitfires had a 17 year run and so did "box-Spridgets". If you include the Frogs, Sprite/Midgets had a run of 21 years.
Lotus/Caterham Sevens might be said to have an even longer "run"....but no two of them is really alike!

Great point! Thanks for clearing that up for us. But if it helps the first year of production for the MGB was actually 1963 (with production actually starting in May of 62). This means production spanned 1963 (or 62) thru 1980.

Anyway we are kind of getting away from the subject of the original post - But it seems that my comments in my last post have been misconstrued by some and require some clarification.

So I should point out that the Classic Motorsports article about how the MGB is the Best Sports Car – did concede that the Miata out sold the B and currently is the best selling Sports Cars to date. Not sure I agree with that, but regardless CM went on to say that the MGB warrants the title of “Best Classic Sports Car” based solely on it’s numbers and the fact that the Miata isn't a classic - yet. But for now the "Classic Sports Car" title would seem to belong to the B.

That said - Lets make the battle really interesting for the title of “BEST Sports Car”? Compare what percentage of total car sales each model made up for those years that they where actually in production and what percentage of the car buying population each model claimed during those years.

Example: 20,000 units sold in the mid-70s would (IMHO) would be much more of an accomplishment than the sale of 20,000 units today. Yes I'm a little bias - but in this battle I would tend to think that the MGB would win.

Morgans have had a very long run and can still be had new.
 
Alfa's are a pretty good buy compared to some other sports cars. I really like the small sedans. I had a Berlina 1750. It was too heavy for the power.
