Another speedometer cable replacement question

Replacing the 3 part cable on a 76 with a 1 piece cable. I purchased a one piece cable that goes on a 78 midget. Top end has typical screw on fitting for the back of the speedometer. The lower end has a cone shaped rubber boot with the end of the cable sticking out about a 1/2". The drive pinion on the transmission also has a piece of cable, which looks just like the end coming from the cable. What connecte these two male ends togather? is there some sort of sleeve which fits between the two ends that connects the togather? I expected to see another screw type arraingment on the lower end like the top end but this threw me a loop.

could you post pictures? On mine, the cable had a sort of metal washer grommet end with the actual cable protruding the 1/2 inch as you state. At the transmission, there was a hollow square piece attached to the cog that turned the cable. The square end of the cable slides into the piece on the transmission making the cable the male and the transmission the female ends. Then, there was a sort of Y shaped flange that lays over the grommet and bolts onto the transmission pinning it all in place.

does that make any kind of sense?

That make's perfect sense and is what I expected to see. I will try to post some pictures. I have never done it so I am not real sure how to go about it. I also want to check if maybe the male end on the transmission will pull out, it might be a broken off piece of the old cable, didn't think of that until just now.

I seem to recall that the transmission end will pull out - fall out even

Way back when I first changed mine I had the same thing. Turns out the piece sticking out of the transmission was the old broken off piece from the original cable. Try removing it.
