Another silly math problem.

5... it ain't MATH.

"Forty-two"

Bravo to Bayless!

(Could someone please explain where the 32 comes from?)

Confoozled.

Show yer work Bayless? I'm still missin' the relationship.

hmmm - take a look:

The number 32 isn't even shown as a possible answer.

Substituting "p" for plates, "b" for bananas and "c" for the clock face we get
3p + 3p + 3p = 45 so 9p = 45 or p = 5
4b + 4b + 3p = 23 so 8b + 3x5 = 23 or 8b + 15 = 23 so b = 1
4b + 3c + 3c = 10 so 4 + 6c = 10 or c = 1
2c + 3b x 2p = 32 since 2 + 3 x 10 = 32
I think the confusion was the multiplication of 3 bananas times 2 plates plus 2 on the clock. You multiply be for adding.

The diagram depicted uses a hex symbol, not circular

You're right, I forgot that unless bracketed or such that multiply comes before add/subtract. Haven't done math more complicated than balancing the checkbook in ages.

Eliot, that is not the same problem that Basil posted. Note it has another bunch of 3 bananas on the final equation. The correct answer on it would be 35.

Yes I knew that. I was responding to nutmegโ€™s post.

I think I'm more confoozled than before.

Anyway, amazing how early some of us go online when there's a contest!

Tom you would have had it had you done the multiplication first and not the addition. When the operators are the same type (e.g. addition and subtraction), we proceed left to right and none has precedence. But, if there are mixed operators (addition/subtraction AND multiplication/division), the multiplication and/or division is performed left to right before addition and subtractions.

So, as Bayless correctly points out:
2c + 3b x 2p = 32 since 2 + 3 x 10 = 32
2 + 3 x 10 = 2+30 = 32

No fair, it was dark and very early when I attempted to solve it.
New rule; No tricky questions before 10am EST :ROFLMAO:

Sneaky ... Basil posted the question at last night. So it *was* before 10am!
