Another reason to drive manual transmission cars

Re: Another reason to drive manual transmission ca

'twas a 1961 Falcon "three onna tree" with a whopping 144 C.I.D. straight six in my case. Two years later I was in an MGB. Haven't had a 'merkin car since, automagic transmissions are a box-o-tricks. No use for 'em at all.
They promote careless driving, they oughta be made illegal.

Re: Another reason to drive manual transmission ca

At least they're better than they some used to be. We had a (really LOUSY) company car years ago that had the world's worst automatic transmission. Driving up 95 was a constant adventure of guessing if or when it would decide to shift. Gotta pass someone? Stomp on the gas and wait to see if it'll ever down-shift. Got a hill to climb? Wait awhile and see if it'll downshift. It had cruise-control but that had to be overridden when going up-hill because it wouldn't get aggressive enough to make the transmission work.

Stupid-truck has a regular 350 (non-turbo tranny) [3 "cogs"]

I'd change it over to a gearbox but, everybody says towing w/ a standard is a PITA.
And I hate even looking at that thing.

Everything else I own is manual.
I bought what looked like a nice corolla only to find out that the lady PO had torn out the syncros and it pops outta 2nd...
Oh yea...And the clutch looked like a cat exploded in the bell housing.

Re: Another reason to drive manual transmission ca

I'd not say they're by-and-large inefficient, I think they promote the driver's license as a Rite of Passage. Too many inept folks can manage to start, stop and steer with 'em. They're artificially elevated to be allowed a task they're unequipped to perform otherwise.

Kinda like the "Peter Principle."

But deadly.

Yea...I'd like to see granny stop that LTD w/o manifold vacuum...

Or turn that land yacht after the engine stalls...

Re: Another reason to drive manual transmission ca

Granny should be driving something with less mass than a Nimitz class carrier.
Pedal mis-application would result in far fewer innocent casualties then.

Re: Another reason to drive manual transmission ca

I get to teach my wife to drive stick soon. My current daily driver is an auto, since I bought is shortly after we got married and didn't want to fight that battle so soon in our marriage. I've already told her that the next car will be a manual, though. Auto's just so dull to drive.

I think I'll teach her in the Tunebug -- I've go a spare transmission for it.

! (I tought my wife to drive a stick...many years ago!!) :wall:

Re: Another reason to drive manual transmission ca

Driven a stick and owned nothing else for 35 years now. I find I actually have trouble driving an automatic since both feet are trained so well. Nearly stood one on it's nose once when during a quick stop both fett went to the floor and instead of hitting a clutch, got that big brake pedal...

Yea...I do that 'sleeping dog thing'...

Where you move your limbs for no apparent reason :smirk:
