Another Overdrive question

[ QUOTE ]
Today I tried the proceedure that John Loftus suggested. I turned the ignition sw on without starting the car, engaged the OD sw and proceeded to move the gear shift lever side to side in neutral. When moving it to the right, I was able to hear the solenoid activate. I pressed the accelerator down while moving the shift lever. I could press the accelerator all the way to the floor and the OD solenoid continued to activate when I moved the gear shift to the right. Could this mean the throttle cut off switch is faulty?

I don't think so. The OD solenoid will activate any time the dash switch is on & the gear selector is to the right for 3 or 4. Doesn't matter the position of the throttle switch.

If you turn on the dash switch, gear selector in 3 or 4, the solenoid operates. -- If you now turn the dash switch off, selector still in 3 or 4, -- the solenoid should not release until the throttle is opened a bit.

Hi coastalman, the jury is still out. My premise on the toggle switch is that if we go by hard facts, the toggle switch is still as suspect as anything else at this point. Yet I admitt they don't fail as much as other adjustments. One thing to look at is the wire termination points at the switch just to see if the wire is looking strong and the connections at the switch look clean and tight. I want to concurr with the point Dave R. was making that if you look at the schematic in the book you will see that as soon as you turn on the dash toggle sw, you will have power to pull in the relay coil, closing the c1 and c2 contacts which then sends power from the source at a3 over to the solenoid, via the shifter switch. The only way this circuit will become open and hence not hear the solenoid engage is if the dash toggle sw is opened. The throttle switch does nothing for the engagement of the o/d. It only "HOLDS" the o/d engaged if the toggle switch is turned off when your foot is not on the gas. So the shifter sw will click the solonoid any time the dash sw is on. I must admit that I have believed that with original installation the o/d would not engage when you turn on the dash sw if you were decellerating. But according to the schmatic in my manual, it will engage any time the toggle sw is turned on because it definately will close the c1 & c2 contacts.
I do not have a throttle switch in my BJ7. I manually control my o/d always ensuring that I have at least a little bit of throttle on when I shift it. It does sound like alot of you stuff is working. Check fluid level and quality, and clean the filter.

Charlie,
It's been a while, but I finally got my mechanic to look into the problem. It seems, in my case, it was a bad Overdrive relay. Only cost 33.00 for the part, incase you want to try and replace it yourself. It solved my problem, maybe yours. Good luck, roger
