Today I shot an email to an old friend I hadn't talked to in a couple of years, Jim Krahulec. Back in the late 80's/ early 90's then Lt Col Krahulec was my boss (Division Chief) when I was stationed at the now defunct Air Force Communications Command HQ at Scott AFB, IL. After he retired from the AF in 92, we stayed in contact and were pretty good friends over the years, both being car nuts and computer nerds. The last time I talked to him on the phone was probably 2 years ago.

Anyway, I just received an email back from one of his daughters informing me that he had passed last year (exactly one day after mine and Mary's anniversary). I knew he had been dealing with some health issues, but was still kind of shocked to learn of his passing.

I sympathize. Similar situation with my old college roommate. We lost contact of years after school as we both moved around before the internet. Then reconnected and shared cross country emails and talk for a long time. When I got an email from his wife, who I never got anything from, took me a whole day to work up to opening it and seeing what I expected it was. As we get older it becomes a non competition game of survivor until the last.
