An news article stated that it took Yates two weeks to shoot that car chase scene with McQueen driving the Mustang GT at speeds up to 120MPH at times. McQueen allegedly did most of the driving with stunt men taking over in some of the faster street scenes.
Quite arguably the best car chase scene, ever. NO digital effects, just a 390 Mustang and a Charger R/T goin' at it, with great McQueen at the wheel, no less.
They don't make 'em like that anymore . . .
