Another horn question

Okay, so I got my horn to work -- in a way. I ran a ground from a bolt on the rack to a good ground, and the horn now works when the ring is grounded.

The problem is that my custom steering wheel has an aluminum hub. That hub is touching the ring when the wheel is installed. I looked at my original wheel, and it has a bit of a relief machined into the bottom of the hub -- which my new wheel does not have.

I'm assuming that I can use some sort of nylon or felt washer between the hub and ring to keep the wheel from grounding on the ring. Thoughts?

What about spacing the steering wheel out a bit with any type of washer between the hub adaptor and the steering shaft?
Do I have this right?

That's what I was thinking about doing -- maybe a thin nylon washer would do the trick.

Are you using an adaptor, or is it straight on the steering shaft? Either way, when you tighten down on the steering wheel nut, the whole assembly will compress the nylon washer and push the horn ring gismo forward. That is not good. Are you sure you have the steering shaft set correctly at the pinch bolt? What you need to do is space the steering wheel adaptor, or the wheel itself (if there is no adaptor) with a small washer, steel is OK, so that there is no contact with the horn ring. Hopefully that can be done with dealing just with the shaft, as one does not want the steering wheel or the adaptor to ride or press on the ring gismo. My steering shaft protrudes 1 7/8" from the horn ring gismo.

Thanks for the picture and measurement. This wheel has a custom machined hub (I'll add pictures tonight once I am home).

I'm not sure that anything is correct. I did have the column out over the last year, so it's possible that there is a problem there. The stock wheel doesn't have this issue, though, so I think it is more likely that there is an issue with how the new hub has been machined.

I'll take some measurements when I get home.

You are going to want it to seat down tight on the taper so spacing with washers won't cut it. It appears that grinding a bit out of the wheel hub is what you need to do. Dremel or die grinder?
