Another exhaust question. First time from me

'79 Midget 1500...

It has the stock exhaust on it, the one there the big baffle box runs parallel with the back of the car. Not too bad looking on a rubber bumper car, but looks like ass on a no bumper or metal bumper car.

It's time to change out the exhaust as the old one is shot (I can put my hand over the tail pipe and the car doesn't even flinch. I can hear the exhaust gasses hissing out from all over the baffle box etc.

I know I can put a direct replacement on, but I don't like the look (esp since I plan to de-rubberize the car) I know I can put on a Monza with four pipes, but I think it's kind of gaudy and might be too loud. I know I can get a Harley pipe but that would be too loud too.

Honestly I'm kind of thinking about simply installing the muffler from a 1275, one that comes straight out of the back left side of the car. They're only $50 or so. Seems like a cheap easy solution. Doable? will it screw up anything with the engine? Any other ideas?

If the exhaust pipe is the same diameter it should be fine. In fact you might even try a muffler shop and see what they have.

NO, get a Harley muffler for free or super cheap. They are not loud on the 1500.

Cut the flange off as your stock pipe will slide right up in it. Cut the straight bit off of your old tailpipe on the other side of the muffler and use it as an extention. All you'll need is two clamps and a 1 1/2" connector. it's best to weld the muffler to your extender pipe, but it does have a pressed fit so you can bang it in. Looks great sounds good and lots of new performance. Knock the center baffle out w/ a hammer and a broom stick or something like that.

You can even reuse your hanger off the old muffler and pipe!

Your local muffler shop specialist can fab up a straight exhaust in two shakes of a lamb's tail, easy job for a muffler shop. Tell him how much noise you can stand and they'll give you exactly what you need.

I did this on a Spitfire, cost about $250 and was perfect.

1 1/2" all the way through, the very tip is just under 2". Most shops don't have 1 1/2" mufflers in stock. H-D muffler is no bigger than the early Sprite muffler, CHROME and allot better looking. It's not "correct", but it sure looks good. Allot of folks don't believe it's a Harley muffler at first.

Dresser mufflers are BIG, softails are just right. A little heavy, but weighs the same as ther RB factory resonator and muffler.

Did I mention it was chrome?

This is what I did with Bugsy my '68 Sprite. And it sounds GOOD!!!!! The cost, free from the Harley Store junk heap. This is the time of year to go asking about those throwaways. A coupe of adapters to get it to 1 1/2" and you are good.

And another. Not sure what type of bike this was on originally but this shape is good, get the bullet shaped narrow down tip. The ones that go into a very large slant cut tip makes the car sound like a rice rocket making loud farting noises. This is the shape you want.
