Well since I killed the Turbo Tbird we have, its time to look for a different car. Maybe like an older honda or a first gen RX7. Something relatively cheap. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Keep in mind this is going to be a college car. I might just make my tr6 dependable and drive it but I want some other peoples ideas on a beater car for me to have at college. Thanks

Where's college?

Those first gen RX7's were sweet little cars. My best friends older sister had one when we were in school, it easily handled as well as my 280ZX, although the Z's 6 had much more grunt. Finding a rust free one these days might be the trick though. Probably not as bad as a Z but not great I'd think. How about a 2nd gen RX7? Those were really nice and can be had relatively cheap today, and they were far more rust proof. Same thing with the 1st gen 300ZX, I had an 87 and loved it.

I go to Emporia State University here in Emporia Kansas. My brother has an 85 rx7 so just an idea that popped into my head. A second gen with a turbo would be fun. A crazy thought about a Datsun 210 popped into my head because they take the 5 speed out of those cars and put them into bugeyes/sprites/midget for a 5 speed conversion. Probably not likely but a thought.

Funny you should mention the 210.
Peter Egan has an article including this car.
He was compiling a list of the best future collecible cars (tongue-in -cheek).
The cars listed:

Austin Marina,Sabra (made in Isreal),Kaiser-Frazer,
Ausin America,Rover 3500,TR7,Pontiac Aztek,Datsun 210,
Fiat 850 Spider,& "A Renault anything".

You're in college and gas is expensive. So...

Suzuki Swift / GEO Metro / Chevy Sprint

The 1.0 triple with 5-speed will teach you a lot about conservation of momentum.....and it will get amazing gas mileage.
Durable too.
I had one a few years ago as a Winter-beater and it was great.
Unlike the Civic, the bling-bling, teeny-bopper crowd doesn't like them (except the Turbo) so they are pretty cheap.

Sounds like Emporia Kansas is a small town school.

If you can be reasonably assured of your car's safety, I see no reason not to take it to school with you.

In fact....I can think of one very good reason to take it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd save your TR6 and get something like an older VW Golf/Jetta, or something even cheaper but still reliable like an older Ford Escort/Focus with manual tranny. Emporia is pretty safe but if you don't have a garage, your 6 will suffer.

I know them both (Olathe & Emporia)....here's a thought: pickup.

Lots of room to haul stuff back & forth the 100 miles between home & college plus room to move from college to first apartment afterwards, a good parts hauler for the TR6, and, if its full size, you could hang a trailer behind it & take the TR6 down to Emporia for Spring semester - or to wherever you end up after college!

1st generation Rx-7s are soooo fun to drive. I loved mine - super reliable too. Engines bits are expensive though. How about a Honda CRX? Or a Suzuki Swift GTi (dohc 1.3L - like a modern Mini Cooper).
