Angle Drive Repair

Spoke to a fellow Healey guy the other day and I mentioned to him that the small square drive was broken. He said that he had taken a section of square drive speedo cable and fashioned a replacement for the one he had. He filed it flat, drilled it for the pin. Has anyone here ever done such a thing with success? I don't want to spend $300.00 on a part that can be fixed easily.

Re: angle drive repair

HI Rustynuts, Many times the little short square drive pin has been replaced in the Volvo Cars. However, rather than doing it my self I had a Speedo shop make them for me they have a press that will square a round cable. This insures that the wire strands at the ends do not unwind when the the cable is cut into the short lengths---Fwiw--Keoke

Re: angle drive repair

You do not mention which model Healey you have but if I understand the Moss catalog the only angle drive priced over 200 bucks is for a BN2 It appears the others are a about $50.00. I have replaced the one for my BJ8 a couple of times for the $50.00 price or therbouts.

Re: angle drive repair

HI Ron, Actually if the gears are not stripped you can dismantle, clean, repack with grease and reinstall an angle drive.Once I put the removable cover back on I seal it with JB Weld never bought one yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif. But you are right about the prices.I think the $300.00 was just a figure of speech---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: angle drive repair

I have a 55 bn1 and the 300.00 is what I would pay here in Canada. With the freight, taxes , duty and the exchange rate.

Re: angle drive repair

I have a contact in the UK who repairs them if interested i can get a general price for repairing them
Postage would not be an issues as the are so small

Re: angle drive repair

Hey adamb,
I already have the drive apart, all I need is the part. Does this fellow happen to sell just the square drive pin?

Re: angle drive repair

I think you got it wrong Bud, that also includes the cost of the part!!LOL
I guess its around 20% more than the parts worth for the frt, duty and taxes costs. Now is a good time for me to purchase from the USA since the $exchange isn't that much.

Re: angle drive repair

Have tried a few people and got no where one more person to try having problems getting in contact with him
Will keep trying

Here's a pic that shows the gear and the small flat tab that the square drive was attached too.
