I agree, except I really can't stand reading subtitles. I liked the director's cut version, but some of the dubbed voices were horrible!

That version DVD should have the subtitles on/off option.
Movie is required viewing at submarine school, two recruits left IIRC. Only those who needed the extra pay or the stupid stayed. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

The Battle of the Bulge-Saw it in the theatre as a small child. Watch it everytime it's on TV. Henry Fonda, Telly Savalas, Charles Bronson, Robert Shaw, etc.

He!! is for Heroes is also good. I love the phone scene with Bob Newhart.

Did anyone mention Battleground? Van Johnson, Ricardo Montelban. A true classic. Also didn't see any mention of the Memphis Belle! Another one not yet mentioned would be Empire of the Sun.

Also on my list would be Patton, Bridge too Far, Great Escape, Sands of Iwo Jima (Sgt. Striker!!!), River Kwai, Saving Private Ryan, Sahara, Guns of Navarone. List goes on and on! I grew up with this genere!
 
I also kinda like <span style="font-style: italic">Murphy's War</span> because it's the only movie I know of in which the aircraft mechanic, Peter O'Toole, is the hero instead of being a Cheap Laughs Sidekick character.

But O'Toole's character teaches himself to fly at the end, so maybe it doesn't count.
