An unsettling new world

As an old guy, I do have my phone around all the time in case I get a work or family call, but other than the occasional text, it doesn't get used for anything else. For me, got better things to do than sit flicking through videos, conversations I'm not part of and so on. I prefer to actually talk to folks, hear the sound of voices, walk and watch the world with them.

Mike - that is a *great* description of what many of us wish for. People who communicate - not just people who sit and stare at their screens.

Thanks!
Tom M.

Yup...

...as I sit and stare at my screen....

I am on my phone more than I would like to be. I use it for work, and it has managed to nefariously creep into my life more and more. It is now my walkman, my phone, often times my camera, and I have instagram. At the same time, I actively try to put it away for a few hours each day. I own a Faraday bag that I shove it into to disconnect from the world.

I prefer face-to-face or telephone conversations over, say, email.
Lately I have taken a much more benevolent view of email. I now look at it as simply the modern way to write a letter, and as such email has the benefit of being able to be used to archive conversations. I have recent emails from Doc about cameras; I have old emails from Tony about MG Magnette carbs, and emails from my grandmother about old family photos she had found.

I spent almost 40 years as an economics professor at a large university and I witnessed a noticeable change in student social skills in later years. I am no expert, but it sure seems like the rise in texting has had resulted in a loss of some social skills. Many students seem to be uncomfortable in face to face conversations and they seem to have a real problem reading body language.

I think your observation is spot on.

Did someone say “Walkman”? :D
I still use mine.

My wife

asked me

why I speak

so softly

in the house.

I said I was afraid Mark Zuckerberg

was listening.

She laughed.

I laughed.

Alexa laughed.

Siri laughed.

The TV laughed

The iPhone laughed.

It was a fun time.

I was in a bike shop a couple of years ago. The lady asked me my name to look me up in their computer. I said my name is Elliot and immediately the ladies iPhone laying on the counter said: “Pleased to meet you Elliot”.
We both stared at he iPhone and shook our heads.

My niece Beka is one of those uncomfortable with face to face interactions and would much rather sit in a corner with her phone. I do miss the days when she, her sister and cousin were little and we could play games and tell stories when we were together for holidays and such. The young folks overall seem to think I tend to talk too much rather than just exchange messages.

I'm on my phone most of the day at the moment.
Recovering from a double heart bye pass. In my fourth week. I can't do much and boredom is killing me. But I have to say there is so much fake news. Or click bait which takes you to a page full of adds.

So sorry to hear of your bypass surgery. I hope you have a speedy recovery. A month is not very long. To help with the boredom, just post more often on the BCF :encouragement:
