American Eagle commuter & Blackhawk collision

Seven fatalities in the Phili Lear Jet crash, including a pediatric patient and her mother.
Man, just so sad.

Several commentators have noted the ATC did not give a clock position to the Blackhawk when asking if they saw the inbound plane. Maybe be cause they were being asked to do two jobs at the same time?

That's a distinct possibility. I'm sure if that was a factor the NTSB will say so when their investigation concludes. These kinds of accidents are often the result of a confluence of factors coming together in an event chain. Some of the links may be more pertinent to the cause, but any factor in the chain perhaps could have prevented the accident.

One of the videos shown seems to indicate the plane may have had a mechanical failure as it is trailing flames in the last few seconds before the crash. Nothing definite I've seen so far, but does lean in that direction.

Hi Mike - could you give us a link to the video showing flames in the last few seconds before the crash? So far, all I can find is video showing the crash itself, and the horrible aftermath. Edit: I'm thinking it's the landing lights reflected in the foggy air just after descending from cloud cover.

Thanks.
Tom M.

Tom, I don’t have a link but I saw the same video on NewsNation during their reporting g of the crash.

Wish I could but I saw it on one of the national news shows. Couldn't tell the flame colors due to the dark and low resolution, came out looking more black and white, but it did seem to be flames and not smoke as you could see it flash brightly 2-3 times before impact.

It was definitely flames. Commentators speculated engine fire or hydraulic fire.
A resident who lived close to the airport called in a commented that he drove by the airport daily and saw large numbers of large Canadian geese around the airport

Thanks Bob. Did the video show red/orange flames coming from the aircraft? or grey/white smoke?
Watch this New Report from Fox 29 in Philly. Start watching from about 2:15. There is a clip that definitely looks like flames as the plane heads for the ground. EDIT: It is possible that it's just lights from the plane looking like flames due to the speed of the plane and the frame rate ofo the camera taking the picture.

My eyes aren't what they used to be - but beginning at 2:15 I still can't see any color of flames - just a whitish "smear" in the air.

Thanks for posting the video. It's truly terrifying that it plunged at such a steep angle, especially so soon after takeoff.
