I noticed the other day, while adjusting my valves, that I have a Hole I hadn't spotted before.

The Hole in question is in the rocker pedestal for valves #7&8. The shaft looks like it's threaded behind the hole, and currently a little offset. Is there supposed to be a set screw or hex plug or something there, perhaps to locate the shaft? I can't believe I've never noticed it before, but I searched pretty carefully and didn't see any loose screws laying around in the valve train.

This look familiar to any of you 1500 guys?
 
just checked, and yes, there is a set screw that goes there - Posi drive head, slightly wider than usual. I believe it is the screw that locks the rocker assembly in place. I can post a pic tomorrow if you want. The question of the night, is, where is it?
 
Is it small enough to fall through an oil return and be lying about in the sump?

I found mine in the one of the galleys. That bolt is crucial to the longevity of your valve train. Without the rocker shaft will turn such that the oil passages do not line up correctly.
 
Aww, nuts. :cry: And just in time for prime drivin' season.

Well, I searched this morning and it definately isn't wedged beside a pushrod or caught in a spring...hopefully it just slipped peaceably down under, maybe a long time ago. Now when I pop off the oil pan to re-do my thrust washer<span style="color: #FF0000">*</span> I'll have something else to look for.

Anyone know the thread pitch and size of that screw? Maybe I can find an Allen plug that'll fit in the meantime.

(<span style="color: #FF0000">* </span>I'm intentionally making that sound easy and routine; actually going into the bottom end scares the willies outta me.)
