Depending on where and which aluminum head you purchase, the higher quality models on the market are gas flowed and come with larger valves & springs. That said, you might only see a benefit over the weight savings if you up grade your induction and exhaust system as well. I still use a cast iron "MM" head on my '57 vintage racer, but I've massaged it quite a bit over the years to handle the additional period performance "enhancements".
If you've looking for the best bang-for-the buck on engine performance, I'd recommend a lightened flywheel. You really wouldn't have to change anything else to see the improvement.

I have a Denis Welch aluminum head, but I also have a rally cam, HD8 SU's, headers, etc, etc, etc. I agree with Dougie that to see the real beneft you have to upgrade the rest of the flowpath.

And of course, if you made those changes to a stock head, you would also see improvements. Has anyone compared the the output difference between the two heads with all other changes being the same?
