I would be very PO at this point. I have owned probably 50 TR's in the past 30 years and have had very little problems with starters. Rebuilt and replaced a few but if they worked they cranked the car over very well. Haven't ever thought about replacing one with a gear reduction one.

Like I said, I have got my fingers crossed. This really has been a pain in the butt.
Marv, this is the 4th starter I have had on this car in 30 years. When the last one failed, I decided to go with a gear reduction to go more modern. It is lighter and when it works right cranks better. I also hoped to just bolt it on and go. In retrospect, I would have been better off going in a different direction.

You'll be happy when it's sorted. I bought one on ebay for my early 3 about 2 years ago and they work great.
An added advantage is it works well with my chewed up flywheel ring gear (early shrunk on type). If I'd of replaced the original starter I'd of had to pull the ring gear as it was sticking/chewing it up more...the orig starters start to spin as they move fwd to contact the gear ring and always chew them up a bit, over time alot.
The new redu starters don't spin until they engage...no sticking or issues on my old chewed up gear ring. Have a new gear ring but it'll sit on the shelf til I need to pull the tranny.

Bobby sent me a new gear. This one appears to be the right diameter. It has 10 teeth, where the previous one only has 9. The original starter has a 10 tooth gear. I installed it night before last and test cranked it. Everything sounds good. Now if it will just last....
An additional note: I have had a conversation with Dave Austin at British Starters. He was very helpful and is a Triumph guy himself. If I had known about him and his company to begin with, I would have never gone the ebay route.
