Alternator

I see here in my TRF manual/parts guide that theres a delco alternator that is an alternative to the lucas (prince of darkness X.x) alternator. But it says here its only up to the 72' model year. And I just happen to have a 75' TR6. Is there any improvements with the delco alternators? And more importantly will the delco even work with my TR? Also, is there any better alternators out there besides those, or would you recommend a gm alternator conversion? I also see a good alternator on the PRI website, but it says its only for spitfires. So right now Im really trying to figure out my options at this point.

TRdynamo,
I installed a Delco alternator a week after I got my '74 TR6. That is how long it took before it started giving me trouble!
I think there are a few distinct advantages over the original Lucas. First you can get a replacement or have the Delco serviced or get parts anywhere in the country. Can't do that with the Lucas. Also the alternator I got has an output of 93 AMPS as opposed to the old 43 AMP Lucas. This helps alot when you are running additional non-stock electrical items such as an electric fan.
I picked up my conversion kit off of E-Bay and to be honest with you I do not know the part number of the alternator.
If you do a Google search for TR6 alternator conversion you will find several sites that give you all of the details on what to get and how to perform the swap.
In my case it was an easy install, it bolted right up to the existing bracket and the only other thing needed to do was to cut off the Lucar terminal and attatch the proper Delco connectors. I even reused the belt. The whole job took about 15 minutes./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Trevor- If you have a LBC you have to know 2 words. DAN MASTERS. Google him and you will find the instructions on the Delco conversion. It is different for new and later cars. If you can't find it I have it somewhere.

Hi,

Dan Masters not only knows what he's talking about, but also has the rare gift of being able to explain it in understandable language! His book served me well with my TR250 project, but I would say that the content of the book could help anyone with Lucas or Smiths components in their car. That's most of us, right?

Best regards,
