alternator replacement

I would like to replace my non-functioning alternator with something off of another vehicle that might be easier and cheaper to find. Has anyone done something like this or found an alternator that will bolt on correctily to a 1972 tr6 Thanks alot for any help dave

Hi Dave:

This isn't an answer to your question directly, but last fall I purchased a rebuilt Lucas alternator for my '74 TR6 from NAPA (I actually used www.napaonline.com).

The details are:

I went with an original style alternator as I don't have a radio or any extra electrical loads in my car. I also didn't want to come up with a different mounting system for a Delco or other brand.

There's a guy on ebay sells recon 85 amp ones for about $90 (his id is mgc something). They look the same size as stock. I'll tell you how they fit when it goes on the engine...

I did a Delco 10SI conversion on my GT6 and a Bosch/Motorola conversion on my Mini. There is a Bosch (13107) alternator that is a more or less direct replacement for the Lucas 18ACR alternator.

Hey Dave,
I removed the Lucas alternator from my 73 TR6 (it is a rebuild from The Roadster Factory) and went with a Delco alternator. The Lucas should fit your car. It worked fine when I removed it, having used it for 10K miles. As far as
I know, there is nothing wrong with it. I will sell it for $50, that would include shipping to you, and will take it back if not satistfied. Let me know, taking it to car show next weekend to sell at parts swap.

The delco unitis a good fit for the 6 . The Bosch unit has problems of late because of a lack of a pulley on the new units. If you can find one with a pulley it is a great unit with basically a stock hook up to the original. I suggest you to Google TR 6 Alt. There are hundreds of pages in webspace on this subject. It is a worthwhile change.

Bosch makes a good replacement. Out put is a little more than stock LUCAS. My experience was with a '74 TR6....don't know if there is a difference between '72 and '74.
