alternator question

Does anyone have a recent (1976) alternator off their car? From a previous post you will know that my dash "not charging" light is on all the time and the alternator doesn't seem to be charging. Pulled it tonight and before I go crazy I want to check the simple things. If you look at the arrow in the pics, you will see it pointing at a piece of copper that looks like it should be attached to something - I just can't see what. Can someone pull the end cap off theirs and check it out?

thanks all.

John, I will pull the back off of one tomorrow and check. Sorry I didn't catch this earlier. Had to make a toy run on the bike. ...Hombre

anyone had a chance to look?

thanks all

it appears as if something shorted and vaporized that ground strap maybe a wire rubbed bare on it / take a look on the inside of the other half and see if theres something that may have caused the short

also check the wires on the rectifier ( the thing in the bottom of the pic). i have had those get brittle and break.

well here is the update. took the alternator into be checked and there is much to be done. $140 of much to be done, so I will be getting a delco conversion. this post is thus moving over to Duncan's conversion posts to sort out the conversion.
