My alternator (Ford 3G) negative ground is wired through the control box as shown in the bottom diagram and the contact point insulated:

Problem is with the charging indicator wires connected to the "D" terminal, the charging light remains on. If I remove them from the terminal and connect them to each other, the charging light comes on with the ignition and goes out when the motor starts. Will there be any impact on the alternator function if I just leave them off the D terminal and connect them directly?

Hi RichI have used the LUCAS Control box only as connection bar -NOT connecting the GROUND and putting paper over the relays contacts- my car is NEGATIVE EARTH modified and my alternator is a LUCAS- my light stay ON when the engine is started - OFF when throttle is pressed over 2500 rpm- then stay off, and lighting only at low idlehttps://picasaweb.google.com/112770819864514987162/ALTERNATORMYConversion#5702389178508772258and a Google album dedicated to modhttps://picasaweb.google.com/112770819864514987162/ALTERNATORMYConversion#

No. To test, connect you meter across the battery terminals and it should read, say 12 - 12.5 v. Start the engine, try not to rev it and you should see little or no voltage increase. Rev the engine, this kick starts the alternator internal regulator and you should see an increase. Turn all your lights on, the voltage should drop, rev the engine, should go back up.

Rick, I'll attach some pics here I hope. They show my set up. Instead of blocking out the relay I decided to eliminate it and install a terminal strip. The connections on the terminal strip are exactly the same connections as would be done on the bottom of the regulator. Dave.
