Alternator fan/pulley removal.

OK, there's a nut, which won't come loose.
I've damaged the fan in wrestling with it, trying to salvage these parts for the new alternator.
I still want to at least salvage the pulley, and I've taken the old one to bits and still can't find a way of keeping that shaft still and turn the nut.
There's always the angle grinder to get the pulley off, right?
Even if I buy a new fan and pulley, how would I tighten / torque that nut without the same problem?

The only way, and I'm assuming here, if it's on the car attached to drivebelt, turn against the direction of the belt with the car in gear?

Remove the hood
Drive 55 to 60
Find a brave souled freind (expenable)
Have them lean over the windshield and jam a wrench on it.

A strapwrench on the pulley and an air wrench is the only way I have found to get them loose.
 
Tried air, strapwrench, death wheel.
The nut is off, but the pulley refuses to come free.
Is it locked on somewhere in the shaft or something?
 
Probably keyed. You might need to put a bearing clamp behind it and pull it with a puller. I wouldn't put puller arms right on the pulley. If you warp it, it is toast.

It's already warped, but that's not the point right now. I have a different agenda.

Apparently, the new pulleys need to be put in the oven prior to installation, so I guess that would apply to getting it off.... :crazy:
 
I've always found the most difficult issue was getting the nut off regardless of it being an alternator or generator. One day in frustration I decided to use the impact wrench my wife had given me. Holding the pulley with a strap wrench and hitting the nut with the impact wrench was immediately successful. It's the only method I use now. Once the nut is off I've never had problems removing a pulley. If yours is stuck, perhaps a little penetrating oil and a 3-leg gear puller would work to extract it.
