Alternator Conversion Kits

I got my Mitsubishi alternator and a bracket at the pick-n-pull for $25, a long bolt and a 12" piece of 1/4" galvanized pipe for another couple of dollars and finished the job for under $40 using directions from the web.

That leaves about $160 for sex, drugs and rock and roll or whatever.

If you don't want to fuss around and prefer to just slap it on out of the box, the price doesn't seem all that bad.

I mentioned the bracket offered by MiniMania with the thought of using it with a salvage alternator, but I thought I would troll for opinions first.

My options are very limited here (small town); local auto parts ask approx $100 for a generic one-wire alt, and the closest salvage yard is about 50 miles away. What model Mitsu (or alternative, no pun intended) would I be looking for?

Very good, thanks. It looks as though I might benefit from the MiniMania bracket.

My old generator is only putting out 12.5v, so I'll have to make a decision pretty soon.

I found that a Volvo Bosch unit fit with only small modifications. (This is one with an offset pulley.)
It needed:
A spacer for the pivot,
mount the pivot on the back of the water pump ear,
and don't use the factory spacer for the adjuster bracket.
The Bosch unit uses only two wires, the main power wire and the exciter (from the ignition light).

If I knew how to add a photo in here I could show you mine .
I used a toyota starlett alt and the piece of tube as mentioned above it was a piece of cake and cheap!

I did a one wire 63 Amp Delco on my 1500, using a Mr. Gasket chrome (ugh) alternator bracket. Thats all I needed. Uses OEM belt and engine mounting bracket although I needed to drill the hole out larger.

It's like Day and Night difference- all pun intended.

I used the Moss kit,it works perfect and looks good. Nice and easy to install, would do the the same again.

Phil, may I ask, what alternator is supplied with the kit?

Same here. I think I got the alternator from a '78 Camaro off ebay for like $35 shipped, $12 for the Mr. Gasket bracket from Pep Boys, and maybe another $10 for bolts and a Gatorback belt. Works like a charm, much better than the old generator.

but what did you do about the TACH?

It is a Lucas alternator,( I think 45amps) I have only used it for about 700 miles, but very happy to date. Includes the belt, bracket, all hardware, IMO good value. I keep the headlights on all the time to enhance our small size, sometimes I forget to turn the lights off, so far the bat seems to stay charged for a long time. Must find a buzzer to remind me to turn the lights off.

Okay; thank you all for the information. Now I have a good frame of reference with which to make a decision.

A great day to you all...
