TR4/4A Alternative system...

Can anyone direct me to an alternative fire trap system?...I know the Y part is unavailable and I did read at one time that there is a way to by pass this system in favor of a more reliable one...Marla

Marla,
My ’63 Tr4’s flame trap “Y” and connecting hoses kept filling up with water and a milky oil/water mixture during cold weather driving. So some ten years ago I replaced the whole system (not a very effective factory vent system by the way) with the PCV system from a latter Tr4A and K&N air filters.
The Tr4A system has proven trouble free in my use.

You can drill and tap NPT for a hose fitting in the boss in the middle of the intake manifold.

Sounds good...I just have to figure out which K&N filters I need...Moss has several...any thoughts?...looking at Moss I think 222-925...Marla

Yes it can be done.
1)Either drill and tap your existing manifold to accept the PCV vacuum nipple or do what I did, use a Tr4A intake manifold (drill and tap at the raised boss between the carbs.
2)Obtain the following parts:
a)PCV assembly.
b)the two PCV hoses
c)the PCV mounting bracket
d)various mounting bolts, nuts, hose clamps
e)PCV vacuum nipple (or Tr4A intake manifold)
f)a pair of K&N air filter assemblies
All the above items are available from either the Roadster Factory or Moss, Tr4A intake manifolds appear in eBay often.

I looked at your setup, what is wrong with it? it looks complete.
Did you run into the same problems I did during cold weather (water, oil sludge, etc)?

As a side benefit of going over to the PCV system, the engine oil leaks decreased a LOT.....

p.s.
Moss 222-955 are the K&N filters I used.

The Y system is starting to get real flimsy...metal wise...had to clean them out of all the sludge that was blocking it because the car was not running right...using way too much oil...the car does have a slight oil leak so if it was possible to change as you suggest it might be better in the long run to change it..right now going with flame thrower ign and coil because it should run smoother etc...I have to get the carbs adjusted as the car is running too rich...had to pull the spark plugs and clean them because the car would not start after I drove it 10 miles...problems pop up but one carries on...Marla

Marla,

PM sent.
