On that thin sheet metal, bolting would seem to me to be better than welding.
Kind of like the morning after affect of my younger misspent youth. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but then what happens when you go to remove the weld. If it's really solid and you have a good welder, give it a try.
I personally would utilize existing holes or drill first, but that's just me.

Jack, I usually just tack some 3/4" or 1" square tubing in the openings. One across the top, and one diagonally, top to bottom.
But, I would have no problem with bolting something in there if you can find holes that are positioned correctly to permit adequate bracing.

To stabilize the tub I used pre drilled angled steel available from any home center. Just bolted it through the existing holes used for the fenders, above the door hinges and just behind the door handle areas. Add some cross braces and it works just fine. Taking a TR6 apart is a piece of cake.

Good news: I got the car apart last weekend.
Bad news: I got the car apart last weekend.
The car caged up and ready to pull
Opps! some of the bolts were rusted and stripped, so I welded on some larger nuts to get them off
once the bolts were off the body just lifted right off
With the body gone I could see the nicely rusted frame sections and half hearted attempt at fix them
So the order went out to Moss for the frame repair sections and new bushings for the front suspension.
This weekend I go back down to San Antonio to try and fix the frame
Good news: I got the car apart last weekend.
