Almost finished with the bumperless conversion....

Just thought I'd share a pic of the bumperless conversion, except for buying and installing turn signals, it's done...

sorry for the dark pic, took it last night when I finished the paint work.

The paint didn't match up perfectly, but it's good enough for now until I get the whole vehicle repainted next year.....

Looks good to me too, you did a nice job there. How involved was it to do? Did you have to do much cutting and welding?

[/ QUOTE ]

I had to cut off the old bumper mounts. That only took about 30 minutes with the angle grinder and sawzall. I was trying to be cautious. Then I had to weld in plate over the old holes where the wires for the turn signals came through, and bondo over them. My bondo job isn't perfect, I'm going to have to give it a second try some point down the line.....

The lights in the grille, what brand are they?
Haven't seen many that are that small.

Looks nice. Other than the looks... how much weight did you eliminate? I am not certain if "bumperless" meets codes everywhere... I think I had to put little metal bars on a Volks once when I cleaned it up the same way.

No worries, Rob. I'll have a good look around here in Japan and see if I can't find something like what you've got.
Good to be seen properly in the dark as well... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Looks good!
I have a feeling that some of you have already seen this, but I have an entire page dedicated to this process:

https://npmccabe.tripod.com/mgbumpers.htm

Right now my racer has a left-side '78 fender (with the large hole that Rob has sealed off) and a right-side '63 fender (with the small hole for the turn signals). Looks funny, but it's a racer and doesn't have parking lights anyway.

The bumper weighed about 50lbs I'd say. I didn't weigh it, but it was a LOT heavier than I would have thought. My front end raised up around 0.5" just from removing it. It really helped cure a lot of the rubbing problems I was having (sagged front springs, they still need replacement, but this buys me some time). As for meeting DOT specs, you're right, it's not street legal, but around here, cops couldn't care less and we don't have inspections.....

Re: Almost finished with the bumperless conversion

that sounds about right - you can reckon on about 100 lbs saving for removing both front and rear bumpers. This is equivalent to about 3 more bhp!
