Long story as short as possible. Kelly had a flat on the way home. She pulled over at a truck stop that has a bar behind it where they were filming "True Detectives" w/ Woody Harelson and Mathew Maconowhateverhis name is. Of course it's a closed set but I want to check it out anyway. I finish Kelly up and told her to wait a minute. They are filming a biker bar scene and I just so happened to have on the jacket from my fire suit from racing ( I was doing some melting today) , a two month old beard and my old steel toe boots so I should fit right in. While I was walking towards the back, a "fellow" castmember happen to fall in right beside me. We both strolled right past the gate in the front onto the set. They were inbetween shots so it wasn't a big deal. OnceI was in back of the place I saw it was FULL of bikers. Having had outlaw biker friends in the past, I can assure you these guys weren't actors. The old fat ZZ Top looking guys gave me a glance but that was about it. I did stand out a bit as my jacket is blue and EVERYONE else was wearing black. I got to the back of the set and pulled out my phone like I'm talking to someone while I check things out. There is a fire going behind the bar about 15 feet from me where several young ladies dressed like Kelly Bundy are trying to keep themselves warm. Leather mini skirts and tube tops don't offer much protection in 51 degree weather.

So, I'm haning out and they start getting ready for the next shot and call for everyone who was sitting at the bar to return there. I figure this is a good time for me to split as A.) This is all too familar territory and B.) I like being married to the woman waiting for me in the parking lot. I hated to leave but knew I'd better...

I use to do stuff like that all the time. It was easy because I had always travelled alone. I knew one day something like that would happen again and I wouldn't be able to see where it lead now that I'm married. While it sucked having to leave, it was cool to once again just walk right in to someplace I wasn't supposed and fit right in.

Too bad I had to leave, I betcha Woody woulda been fun to hang out with...maybe a bit too much....

That is a cool story

So cool. I would never have had the guts to just walk in there like that. Sounds like fun.
Of course, the line "I was doing some melting today" sucked me in. I'm collecting the parts now to build my little crucible forge. But that's for another thread.
You couldn't have stayed for one scene? Never been on a set myself, so I don't know how that works.

Techically, yes; morally, no. Kelly worked a double and was dead tired but she still waited for me. Secondly, filming is VERY expensive and I hadn't signed a release. Legally they couldn't film me. If they figured that out durring or after the fact, I just cost them a bunch of money. Ultimately it was someone's responsibility to keep the set secure and I can assure you there would have been fallout. It wasn't worth jepordizing someone's job just for me to get my jollies not to mention EVERYONE has to stay even later to reshoot it. It was already midnight. I just wanted to see what was up, I did and it was then time to leave. I've been an extra before so it really wasn't that big of a deal to me. Matter of fact, I've been thinking about doing it again. Even though I'm not an actor, it would have been very unprofessional for me to stay.

Interesting stuff. Not a lot of movie shooting round these parts. There used to be. At one time the village of Cayuga Heights on the north side of Ithaca was the center of movie making in the U.S.That was during the time of silent films. Soon it was discovered that filming could be done year-round in the warmer climate of Hollywood. The rest is history.
Hal Roach is buried here in Elmira, not far from Mark Twain.
Anyhooo.. I'm hoping to start out melting some aluminum with charcoal. eventually I want to move up to a propane burner. no specific ideas yet for what to make from it, but the short list includes some early 1900s motorcycle engine parts. Eventually I'd like to try some iron, and make a cylinder and cylinder head. We'll see. It really all depends on my model making skills.

Easy to make a propane burner and a forge. No need for crazy thick refractory, just use one layer of kao inna garbage can. That's how we raku and I melt my stuff. A lot quicker as less to heat up. Lemme know when you're ready. Lotta what you see out there isn't nessisary. Don't use cans or extrusions. Source previously cast stuff for materials. I've been melting cracked heads.
