I do that (engine oil) every event.....I have about a dozen old oil filters sitting in my garden shed (waiting for our Haz-Mat Day pickup in my town).
I really need to change the trans oil soon but I'll have to see if I have time in the next month. Last Winter I pulled the trans side cover and blew the whole thing out with my pressure washer...there was *evil* stuff in there!
The final drive leaks so much that all my "topping up" should hold me until racin' is over....

It all went rather well... no large chunks in gearbox or diff, tho the diff was waay past-due for the change. The pinion seal leaks, but until just recently there were no crush-tubes to be had. Now I've got one and a seal, so the rearend will be coming out as soon as I can get this MGB done and "legal".

Just took it out for a shake-down romp... apparently just as water does; hypoid gear oil "seeks its own level"... gear oil flung all around the chassis at the pinion "slinger".
...oh well, I'll just consider it Italian rust inhibitor fer the time being. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

This is a design feature for my Jensen-Healey's Lotus engine. After 3 weeks ownership I already have entirely new oil in it... and on it... and under it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif
