Alfa problems

Started the TR6 today and moved it out of the lower garage so I could get the John Deere out to mow the lawn. It started immediately and warmed right up. After cutting the grass, I went to start the Alfa. A few groans and...dead. I put the charger on it and as soon as it got back to 12 volts, I started the car and checked the alternator. It seemed fine. The only thing running all the time is a clock. A PO had prophetically fitted a quick disconnect and I plan to use it. The battery is in the trunk so it will be hard to do tests between the battery and the alternator. While the battery was charging, I refilled the windshield washer reservoir. It seemed to be taking a lot of fluid and sure enough, a huge puddle was forming on the floor. Going online, I discovered both of these things are common Alfa problems. In vain I looked for a radiator cap. Back online, I discovered there is none. You fill the radiator through a big, black plastic cap on the overflow tank. Draining the rad calls for removing the lower hose. The distributor and alternator are buried in the engine compartment. I'll never complain about the TR6 again...

Paul - my next door neighbor has three Alfa's. He's always showing me the "design elements" which make maintenance a major PITA.

Just wait'll you start having brake problems. The fun has only just begun! I think we've been bleeding the brakes after doing brake work maybe once every week or two.

Update. The battery voltage is now 13.06v after an overnight slow charge. It will stay there because I will keep the quick disconnect disconnected until I want to take the car out. Not too likely in the next few days. Forecast is rain for the next 7 or 8 days. Maybe some sun Sunday. Not good news for the Greenwich Concourse. Son claims the battery is too small and he never used the windshield washer because the reservoir was cracked. Now he tells me. If you want to get a laugh, Google Alfa 4C windshield washer filling. You need special tools!

The battery in there is something called an Auto Extra. It's only 8" long by about 6 1/2" wide. Looks like a lawn tractor battery. I looked it up online. Looks to be a cheapo. Sonny Boy may be right. It may be too small. I think a type 24 would be better and I think it will fit. Anyone ever use an Auto Extra?
