Alfa brakes broke...

Left front is FUBAR'd. Pistons in the caliper are "stuck" and have turned the pads to junk, fried the boots. One piston is NOT willing to come out. Rotor warped. BAH! That'll teach me to "back burner" checking a "funny" feel to the brakes. Now it gets a new "everything" up front, and likely the backs will get the treatment soon. I've a FULL set of new rotors for an early GTV here, all the hydraulic kits. NO Spider ones... RATS! I want my GTV's back.

Doc, I want your GTV's back!
I agree, "later" is never a good time to check on a perceived problem. The cost seems to rise exponentially in relation to how much later, doesn't it.

Oh, man. That sucks.

TRUTH, Jeff. Had I just *done* it I'd face a $16 kit fee... now it's pads, hoses, rotors, the lot. I likely would have done the hoses fer S&G's, but now I trust none of it. Other side likely isn't much better. And I've very likely got another set of calipers for it here *someplace* but can't find the bloody things in all the chaos. *sigh*

I'll get organised ONE of these days. Yeah, right. The day I grow another arm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

Doc, I feel for you...maybe now's the time to walk away from the car while you sort out the 'inventory'...when I get back, I've gotta spend a couple of days going through one of my buildings - organizing...

Doc, one surefire way to find the calipers is to get new ones. As soon as you do that, the previously undiscovered ones will fall off the shelf and land on your foot. Happens all the time at my place.

Yeah, I know. I ~expect~ that, actually.

I was so busy organising the MGB bits I TOTALLY ignored the "Alfa-bits". The car has run reliably for the last six years, and I guess I took it for granted too long. Now it's jealous, methinks.

"Familiarity breeds contempt" I always told my guys when they were working with their weapons systems - get to familiar & you start to trust them too much & they go "T-U" right in the middle of a firefight!

If my memory serves me correctly, that is no time to be doing maintenance! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Yeha, I know, iknow...

I just have to get my arse kicked once every ten years or so.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey, Doc - your Alfa brakes - my GT floor...we both just got kicked...mine will be a lote less expensive but possibly more time consuming!

I'm hoppin' around in here like a weasel on speed. Just posted about th' same thing 'over there' in your other thread >>>

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

heheheh...we're both working on one another's problems...hw 'bout you just bring the Alfa up here & we'll do its brakes & my GT's floors at the same time....save hopping from forum to forum!

If we were geographically closer, we'd be in trouble ALL the time, friend. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And here I am stuck in between both of ya's! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know I saw those TR6 bits `round here somewhere(yeah, 10 years ago /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif )

Sticking pistons are pretty usual on older Alfa Romeos, especially if it got the ATE brakes. Typical fault on rear brakes because they are used less. Had that problem myself on both Alfa and early 911 (which also use ATE). A way to prevent this is once in a while to put all the power you got on the brake pedal (when the cars stands still), this will prevent the pistons for sticking.

Yeah, this'n was "marginal" in '98 when I bought it... I "exercised" it then, put new pads on all four corners of it but I was figuring I'd get to rebuilding them before this. Laziness on my part. I'm not too gentle on this car, so they got used well. I got my money's worth. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Got my bits this afternoon from Centerline. New hoses, new pads and a kit for the front cali's. T'morrow will be a "hammer 'n tongs" day here at th' hovel. "Ahh-tay" calipers ain't gonna get no mercy...

"Let th' Games begin!"

sounds like a lot of fun ... hope you have plenty of beer on hand this time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
