Alaska!

Gotta have a Yahoo account to view it! Lots of folks don't! I have one, but it's showing the site is down. What else is new. :rolleyes2:

Oups, well here are a couple of posts by optimists:

The trip to Alaska goes through Canada not through some third world country.
They are civilized, very nice people. There are grocery stores, service
stations, repair facilities, RV parks, restaurants, and many other
businesses along the way that cater to Alcan travelers. There are many
thousands of campers and motorhomes that make the trip every year. We
found internet connections almost everywhere we stopped. It is not a vast
wilderness, just sparcely populated. The road is paved all the way. Get
a copy of Milestone, it will show every attraction and facility along the
way.

When we made the trip we had no mishaps whatsoever; no chipped or cracked
windshield, no lost headlights, no flat tires, no broken springs, no bad
bearings, nothing but a very pleasant trip with drop dead gorgeous scenery
around every bend. The only problem we had was a leaking valve on the
black tank and a very large Winnebago dealer in Anchorage took care of that.

Go, have fun, it is a wonderful trip. Once again a caution about
overloading. You don't need to take everything you own or a lot of spare
tires, bearings, tools, parts or all that other stuff you think you might
need. Remember weight is your enemy.
I have traveled to AK twice spending 5 months there each trip and will return this summer for another 5 months! I did have some issues and all were resolved by local folks…even had a wheel bearing changed in Seward!! Part was sent from Justin in CA to a Shell station in Seward which agreed to receive the bearing while I went kayaking for several days in Aialik Bay! Drove to the arctic ocean (Deadhorse), took the ferry to Cordova and to Kodiak and even made the mistake of trying to drive to the Kendicot mine (McCarthy Rd is really bad road at the time)..got almost to the end and found that the bridge had been taken out of service the preceding evening by a too tall truck! Boondocked everywhere…yes single woman..no problems.

and DO BUY the MILEPOST as Larry suggests, and study it before you leave. The mile markers depend on which direction you are going…initially confusing for me but got the hang of it eventually! AND the MILEPOST has LOTS of coupons albeit for couples! The MILEPOST even shows places to boondock. The directions are very good. Camp inside Denali (make a reservation at Teklanika River CG for a few days and ride the green buses)

You will be glad you made the effort!!!

Insert vintage photo (from my collection), just can't resist... :playful:

I'm quite certain the highway is far better these days... I have heard to watch for frost heaves on the highway, where the pavement cracks and creates bumps... The further north the bigger they are...

The September 2013 edition of Healey Marque has a story of driving a 1959 bugeye Sprite 6,962 miles from Anchorage to North Plainfield, New Jersey in February and March 1966. He started on Monday, February 15 with the temperature a balmy 35 degrees below zero, packing arctic survival gear, tools, Lucas parts, fire starters, C Rations, two quarts of oil, and civilian clothing. On the luggage rack he had a five-gallon gas can and a pair of cross-country skis and poles. Easy!

There's an MGA guru who's a member of the Chicagoland MG Club - Barney Gaylord. He's driven to the furthest point of Alaska and back in an MGA. His webpage is https://www.mgaguru.com/index.htm He's the guy to get in touch with. He's ultra knowledgable and very personable. Send him an email, I'm sure he'll get back to you.
