Air filters

Like many others I have found it difficult to remove and, in particular, reattach the air filters because it is difficult to reach the screw with the filter in place. I have seen that some forum members have replaced the screw with a stud with a hole drilled through it, and a wave-type cotter pin through the hole to hold the filter in place. I had some difficulties in getting that connection firm and air tight, so instead I used studs that I screwed into the threaded holes in the filter, and used nuts on the carb side. It was much easier getting nuts on the studs than using the original setup with bolts.

Kind of makes you wonder what "they" were thinking as they had many years to improve the design and it would not effect their profits.

I had always thought that the bolt arrangement on my Tricarb was original, bit that is obviously not the case - thanks Steve. At least my car is not only easier to maintain now, but also more original! Cleaning the filters was the last thing on my list, so now it is time for the first spring trip. The weather is fantastic right now, really looking forward to that.

i used the studs in the cleaner. mark close and then rotate them in or out to get them tight. it also helped that i had an extra set of gaskets on hand. on two of the carbs i used 2 gaskets.
the only one i could not do was the very back one. just can't see the hole. so i used a nut on that one. i have an old open end wrench i cut in half that works pretty well getting in back there.

My 1960 BT7 came with bolts, not studs. But it does look like the studs would be easier to manage. I'll give it a try when I need to clean the filters.
