Sounds like you don't need it. Pulling the A/C makes getting to the distributor clamp a BUNCH easier, as well as access to the power steering pump and the low temperature sending unit on the radiator. And you can pull the condensor - better flow through the radiator.
When you do remove it, just keep all the bits, in case you or someone else wants to replace it. Even if you leave it in there, it'll need refurbishing anyway - probably a new compressor and drier. Be sure to seal off the ports where the hoses enter and exit the evaporator under the dash.
