Some better tanks have ASME certification but as mentioned, the tanks don't last forever. I'd speculate that the most common failing of home compressors is that few people follow the recommended procedure to periodically drain the tank of condensation. Over time, the bottom rusts, thins, weakens, and blows out. This is a shame. I get catalogs from a surplus company that routinely lists replacement air tanks. A less expensive remedy is to buy the auto-drain kit from Harbor Freight (part number 46960). It isn't perfect, but this kit works and is cheap insurance and an effective way to extend the life of your compressor's tank.
