Ahhhhh no brakes...

Offline
Well, I just went out to start up all the cars and take them for a quick drive up the street and back... Just to keep things working smoothly, I do this about once every week or 2. Got in the MGB, and started great. Backed up and pedal to the floor... Scared the *beep* outta me. Good thing I didn't go down the hill! I guess the hoses have completely gone now. Project for next week! Woohoo!

I have very tiny cracks, or what look like cracks on my front brake hoses. I have two new ones which I bought a couple weeks ago. Do you need to drain all the brake fluid to change them, or just bleed after?

Paul

Just bleed after.

IMHO, just doing TWO is "false economy". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Yep, I would do the whole bit. You know they are the same age. Would consider the clutch hose as well.

Three words "Stainless Steel Teflon".

I replaced my old rubber brake lines a few years ago when I installed a set of cross drilled rotors & pads. While SS brake lines ain't cheap, they have a much better peddle feel than normal brake lines and won’t expand or be prone to deterioration & cracking.

Less than $100 bucks for the whole works.

Will add on to my order this afternoon then. Guess if it is laid up for a day, might as well do what can be done.
How far are you going with yours Kenny?

Paul

Well, I just replaced the front left hose a couple months ago, the MC a couple years ago... I have the other side hose and rear hose and rear cylinders new in a box behind the couch, so I'll probably do those. I redid the whole clutch system a couple years ago, and it's fine. I'll get some new front pads, and I have a new set of rear shoes in the box too. So, I should be good after I get all that done.

What are you doing, hording parts?

Yup. I've got almost everything here for a brake job, a front end rebuild, and a valence panel replacement. Oh, and new radiator hoses, a HS6 carb, drivers side motor mount, points, plug wires, and a few other odds n ends. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Never hurts to be prepared! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I need to start a new box for the Alfa soon too as I've slowly started accumulating parts for it too.

Happened to me once......Only I was going over 100mph at the time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is no way to describe the feeling.

Just dribble baby poop down the back of yer neck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Or have you headlights go out at about 80 on a dark road at midnite. Sigh.

That's another good one.

Rt. 70 (or 71?) through Indiana 11:45 pm & 2 degrees F.
250 miles from home no heater and in the middle of nowhere.

Drafted a lori to the next exit where the car died at the stop sign.....Coasted into a McDonald's that was closing.

Probably one of the lowest points in my life.

No cell phone, little $ and a new to the mysteries of Lucas.

I've driven 15 miles whilst using a toothpick to hold the contacts together in a cheap toggle switch that melted to keep the lights going. That was fun.

broken clevis pin on throttle linkage with only a swiss army knife 45 miles from home. Cranked the idle screws all the way up and got about 3000 rpm. Managed to not hit a single light and rolled through a few stop signs. Big climb up out of a river bottom on a two lane road ended up at 5mph about 100 feet from the top and 50 cars behind me just laying on their horns... no way I was going to stop or I'd have to turn around and build up enough speed to try again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

yup... did the headlights going out at 80, also. La Tuna Canyon Rd... wasn't very fun I tell ya /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

Speaking of brakes, I can't lock up the brakes on my '68 GT. The pedal, lever, and box are good, structurally. The pedal is firm and it pulls straight.

I honed and rebuilt the rear cylinders and replaced the shoes. I replaced the master cylinder and freed up the valve thingie between the two systems. The pads, rotors, and shoes are stock.

What gives? Am I expecting too much from non-power brakes? I guess the last things I drove without power brakes was my '65 1100 and an armored personnel carrier while playing GI Joe.
