AH frame rebuild

My first time on the forum, joined yesterday and hope I do this right. I am having my 62 3000 tricarb frame welded now. I have been waiting 20 years for this. Several pannels, floors, outriggers, sills, trunk, doglegs and others etc.. Should be done by the end of the year. What next? Remove engine/trans then Dip or media blast or hand sand, what kind of paint on the frame (primer, rust inhibiter, finish coat)then suspension back on? IS there a best or correct order? I need to do some of this myself because of $. Should I wait for the engine rebuild till I am closer to having the frame ready for it? I have owned the car since 1976 but its been off the road since 1982 or so. Any opinions? Thanks in advance. I am sure I will have many other questions. Scott

Hi Scott,
Welcome to the forum! Glad to hear that you are making progress on a long time dream. As to your questions about the restoration procedure, I suggest you take a look at the following article which lays out a general approach. Of course nothing is written in stone so you could vary from this but it is a good staring point.

Regarding the engine rebuild, it is a good idea to try to time things so the engine goes back in 'fresh'. I plan to run my rebuilt engine on a test stand before plopping back in the car. That way, you do the initial break-in and know the engine will run before installing it.

You should also try using the 'search' function near the top of the page. We have had quite a few discussions on media blasting vs. dipping lately. Also continue to ask questions because it's a good way to get a wide range of opinions.

Cheers,
John

Welcome Scott,
If you are going to fit the wings (fenders) shrouds and doors yourself, remember to put about 600 - 700 pounds of sand in bags in the engine bay and cockpit to simulate the engine and transmission. This should then allow you to adjust the shut lines so that they look even. It would be difficult after the event if you do not do this.
Best of luck

Thanks for the info. I just read the AH magazine article on the AH frame. I never heard of these items before and wish I had read it several months ago before I took the car in. I would have loved to have some of the weak areas strengthened.

NOT too late Bob , the beefed up motor mounts will keep the engine from walking around in the engine bay.----Keoke

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/canpatriot.GIF Too bad you've joined so late in the restoration, but welcome anyway Scott. I've heard good reviews about a brand new frame/chassis mfg. named "Jule" located in Canada. Just think, you could of had a brand new, stronger, frame and chassis already for your mounting of shrouds, fenders, etc. I think the cost is about $6500.
Good luck, and again welcome to the Forum.

SO late, I just started this Fall.
