AGM [Optima-type] battery in chrome bumper B

So I tried to wake up my (seldom driven) MGB from winter hibernation and, lo and behold, the battery won't hold a charge. Needs to be replaced again, for what seems like the umpteenth time. Like alot of folks, I've been using the popular Group 26 single 12V, which is a really tight fit. So tight, in fact, that I usually need to carve the tabs off the case to make it fit.

I've looked at the Optima and the Exide Orbital but neither will fit easily. The folks at Moss told me I could lay the Optima sideways and it will sort of fit, but I really don't want to do that. Both of the batteries mentioned above are AGM or absorbed glass mat technology. These are perfect for my needs: Maintanance free, compact, sealed, low self discharge - they will happily sit for a few years and not mind.

What to do. Surf the web, or course. After an hour of searching, I discovered that the OEM Mazda Miata battery (I know, I know, please bear with me here) is an AGM style originally made by Panasonic. Some quick measurements suggest it will fit easily. It has the correct terminal posts. The specs looks similar to my current Group 26 - and certainly higher cranking that the original spec. The replacement Miata AGM battery is made by WestCo and has very good reviews from the Miata faithful. I took the plunge and ordered one on Monday ($79 including UPS freight) and it arrived on Friday. It fits really nicely. If you've ever skinned your knuckes bare trying to wrestle a battery in or out, this thing is your friend. It almost looks lonely sitting in there.

My battery box is sound, and I'm too cheap to spend $40 for the plastic liner (that must cost all of a buck to make) so I made a little pan out of marine plywood for it to sit on. I still need to figure out how to secure it - probably a couple of industrial strength zipties (the handcuff type) until I engineer something better. I also noticed my main battery cable connection is really corroded. So I ordered one of those from British Wiring. That ought to be fun to install.

Anyway, have a look and maybe this will work for you. I need to drain the old gas out of the tank before she will start, but she cranked strong last night, with the lights and wipers both on for good measure.

Edit: not all Miata replacement batteries are AGM, so if you drop by your local AdvancePepZone store, be sure the kid behind the counter knows exactly what you want. It must be AGM, not a traditional maintenance free wetcell which is what most places will stock. Also, these must be slow charged with no more than about an amp or two - if you try to rapid charge it with a 40amp charger, you'll destroy it.

Great tip! Always good tohave a good alternative idea tested by someone else first /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If this works, I'm going to chat with Kelvin (@Moss) about sugggesting it as an alternative for the MGB - they sell it out of the Miata catalog for the same price and UPS will ship it because it is leakproof. I think this is probably the fourth batttery I've bought in 6 or 7 years.

Let's have some feed back on this battery later. Let us know how it holds up. I have two farm tractors that I put new batteries in every spring. This sounds like it's just the ticket for anything that might set for long periods of time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif PJ

I'm glad he volunteered to be the "lab rat" too. I've put the Optima batteries in other cars (V-12 Jags, mostly), with apparent success but haven't made the "leap" personally.

haven't made that particular leap myself either. My car never sits for long periods of time though. 2 weeks to a month at the very most before I'm in it driving again. The last new battery I bought was two years ago. I ended up getting a gianormous Energizer that barely fits in my '76 battery compartment. The Energizer I picked up fills up every cubic inch available there....

I've had an optima in my B for a while. No issues this winter, I started her once a month (except for the one time I forgot for 2 weeks ) and each time she started on the first crank, it was like using a brand new battery.

It fits perfectly. I love it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've used optima coil cell batteries (red top) on large car audio systems... One's that had 00 guage wire feeding the amplifiers, and even that wasn't quite big enough wire for the current we were drawing...

...And they are awsome batteries. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

As requested...

I'm putting the MGB to bed for the season. Truth be told, I've not started the car since early July /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif. I switched the disconnect on, pulled the choke and turned the key... tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick... started right up.

I love this little battery.

An Optima cell would start Mick Jagger's "Dead Man" a comin'.

Amen to that, Doc. I saw Mick and the Boys together wit' Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker and Guns & Roses (?!) in my younger days (~90?) in Atlantic City. Absolute best show of me life, or so my mates tell me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I have a '92 Miata that has the ORIGINAL Panasonic battery in it, still going strong. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

AGM's have only one drawback...that is price. In every other area, they are superlative to standard wet cells and should definetly be the choice for a car that is layed up for long periods of time. Actually, they should be the battery of choice for any car that you plan on keeping for the long haul.

Edit: BTW, Westco did have some problems with the original battery they were supplying for the Miata. But, from what I've read lately, they got the problems all sorted out.

We put an Optima in a client's V-12 E-type when they first came out. This guy would let the car sit for months unused then call us and whine 'cause it wouldn't start... A gear reduction starter and the Optima cured THAT li'l problem! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you need an Optima battery in the So Cal area, call C&S Classic Battery. The owners are serious gear heads and are both MG owners. Excellent prices as well. And I would assume they can ship anywhere. See their advert on this page for contact info: https://www.tcmotoringguild.org/classifieds.htm

I haven't tried it, but I don't think there's an Optima model that fits a CBB, only the rubber lippers /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

The typical Group 26 battery is 8 3/16 x 6 13/16 x 7 3/4 inches.

I've got a group 25 battery in my '73 CB (9 1/16 x 6 13/16 x 7 3/4). This was a mega-tight fit in the plastic battery box, but it's in there.

Optima's "35" is 9 x 6.7 x 7.8 inches.

Looks good! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif It sucks that I just bought a battery from Napa just over a month ago.
