My first British car was a 1960 MGA, when I really wanted a Healey, in high school. It had a blown head gasket. You couldn't buy much for $300.00 even then. It was 6 months before I could afford a top so when it rained, I parked it at school under the Crafts Building (large overhang). Fixed it and sold it when I went to college. Later, at college I bought a fixer MGB-GT. The guy who owned it lived in an apartment and the block and most of the engine components were literally under the kitchen sink. It leaked. Had it machined and put it back together and later sold that one. In 1979 I bought a 67 3000 which ran perfectly. I bought it from a commercial pilot who was moving. It had been gone through by an airframe mechanic and was perfectly balanced and purred. At a 100 mph, I used to cover the speedo and ask my passenger how fast we were going. If there was no other traffic from which to judge speed, the common answer was "about 65". I later had to sell it for law school tuition. About 25 years ago I bought a 100-4, can't recall the year, as a project which ended with the divorce. Then I next got into Porsches and owned a number of them including three race cars.
But I always wanted a Healey. I bought a 59 100-6 BN6 several weeks ago and pick it up this weekend. I'm really looking forward to it. It has been modified, with a Smitty's Toyota trans swap and front disc brakes. It's a 2.6 so even before I have driven it, I am thinking about more horsepower. Some addictions never die. I live in the greater Sacramento area, so a shout out to all addled British sports car owners in the area. In honor of the occasion, I have a new T shirt extolling the virtues of Lucas electronics. Only British car owners of a certain era understand there are few, if any, virtues to Lucas electronics. Why do the British drink warm beer? If you know the answer, you probably know what Whitworth is!
