Advice Needed: Batteries and Hole Plugging

On my first TR-6 the tonneau was the top(!)...

After getting the "proper" top, the tonneau was discovered to seal better!

Of course the windshield was exposed to the elements all of the time.

But hey, it was winter in Columbus, Ohio.

I was 16 and was simply happy to be in motion...
 
tonneaus and boot covers are a bit problematic on my six. A PO fitted an aftermarket top that a) clips directly to the panel (no stretch bar), b) has six pop studs along the back section rather than the normal five, and c) those six studs are not the sort that allow a boot cover to clip on to them.

I'm not sure what to do about that, really.
 
Know what? It sounds as though he put top fastners in the holes that were for the tonneau fastners.
What you think?
 
I'm not sure what is wrong, really. Here are a couple of photos:

Yep. that's what the guy did. And those are the same kind of fastners that you would use to snap on the tonneau. No need to change them.
I remember that you were lacking the "lift the dot" fasteners on the crash pad. That is the only place that that type fastner is used. The rest are of the type that your top is now using.

Yep, I've got the original tonneau for my TR3, and it's on the car all the time. It's white, a little grungy, but just replaced the center zipper, and works great. The car also came w/ an aftermarket black one, but the original fits better, and the white grew on me....
 
Actually, there should be 13 snaps across the back. 3 on each side installed into the body and 7 across the back, installed on the stretcher bar, which you really, really need. That is what your straps attach to as well as keeps your top taught. Not a good idea to snap directly to the body panel like that. The stretcher bar is still available from the vendors. As is, unfortunately, a new top.

I have a Moss stretcher bar, which I acquired since I planned to install it at some point.

I suppose my big question is: can I improve the configuration without having to buy and fit a new top?!

If you don't mind extra (and fairly tiny) holes in your top and the sheet metal across the back (either could be plugged temporarily with tiny gobs of any sealant), go with that "stretcher bar" and redo everything else "as needed" back to the original configuration. Then even a used original tonneau (or a new one that had the snaps installed as per an original car) could be used easily.

Thanks Andrew ... I'll take a closer look at the car this weekend to make sure I understand what you're suggesting. Right now, the top is awfully difficult to get shut with all the press-studs engaged, so I can't exactly make it worse!
