Read Manry's "Tinkerbell" book when in junior high. Had learned to sail when I was a twelve year old kid, on Lake Erie. Sailed across to Canada in a Ray Green 'Rebel' at 18, with friends (Cleveland paper had us "lost at sea" when we hadn't returned on the scheduled date, too ). Mom was beside herself. Any sailor with experience on that Freshwater Sea knows how fickle it can be; sails luffing one minute and within an hour you're reefing the main.
This story of these two "lost for months" just doesn't make sense to me.
Now that we are on the topic of good reads, Exploring with Byrd is a pretty good read. It is the autobiography of RADM Richard Byrd of arctic and antarctic exploration fame.
