I know the adjust 1 and 3 with 10 and 12 open, then go on to 8 and 11... thing.

The question is rather simple and that is what open means. Yep, does it mean stops opening, half way between stops opening and closing or what?

Or should I just find the lowest point on each valve and adjust them there? Probably not, as valve clearance is a part of timing.

The reason I ask is that am having a difficult time getting the same clearance measurement when I double check my work. I suppose this is due to the cam being in a different place on measurement subsequent to the initial adjustment.

I can't believe I am asking his question, I must be getting old. :frown:

That may indicate that your cam is mis-cut (known as "base circle runout"). In that case, I suggest using the "rule of 13" instead. That is, turn the motor until one valve is fully open (halfway between opening and closing) then subtract that valve's number from 13 and set the corresponding valve. IOW, with valve #1 open, set valve #12; #2 fully open set #11 and so on.

Obviously you can do this in whatever order the valves come fully open (which I don't have handy at the moment).

You may still find some inconsistency in your work, which I put down to "feel" when checking the clearance. Be sure to let the feeler gauge turn to match the gap, as any angle will cause a false reading. Then the gap should tug on the gauge just lightly as you pull it through the opening. Too heavy, and the valve is partially open. Too light, and you are apt to be fooled by the gauge not being perfectly square to the valve. There is a certain amount of skill involved.

Well, what can I say. Follow instructions and things do not work out. Drats, the problem was I did not pay attention to "VALVE OPEN". I translated it in my mind to "ROCKER OPEN".

And to think that once in I actually operated a nuclear reactor.

I should have stayed in a Holiday Inn.
