Adjusting boot lid position

I thought this would be an easy fix, but as usual, I thought wrongly. I am attempting to adjust the position of the boot lid on my 76 Midget. It is too far to the right, so there is a half inch gap between the lid and the body on the left side, and it is almost touching the body on the right side. I have undone the nuts where the hinges attach to the trunk, but almost no adustment.

Has anyone had this problem and solved it? If so, your advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Has the car been wrecked? Have you also loosened the hinges from the deck lid. The lid has a fair amount of adjustment, but if the plate(inside of the lid) has rusted to lid, then it may not be offering any adjustment. I'd take the lid off completely and make sure those captured plates are free to move. Then if needed you can spring the hinges or enlarge the holes in the lid.

I guess that means that if I do fix the problem the car will no longer be an exact restoration????

The car has not been wrecked, and there is virtually no rust on it. (California car).

Thanks for the ideas.

I'm responding a little late, but for what it's worth...

I have a similar problem on my '77 Midget. I believe the '76 and '77 both used the same locking-style deck lid support. On my car, the metal structure is rusted on the underside of the lid at the point where the support attaches. Over time (before I owned the car), the rust allowed the structural member to crack slightly in that spot. As a result, the left side of the lid is buckled slightly because the weight of the lid is not fully supported when it's open.

I don't know if this makes sense (it's darned hard to explain without pictures or hand gestures). In any event, this "buckling" effect has caused the left side of my car's deck lid to be high and a little to the right of where it should be.

No amount of adjusting will fix the condition I've described. I'll either need to repair or replace (probably replace, as I'm basically lazy).

Thanks for your comments.. I did some investigating and discovered that there is a "floating" triangular plate in the mount inside the trunk for each hinge. I could not get precicely what I wanted by manipulating this becaues if you move the plate it wants to move somewhat diaqonally (Diagon Alley???). In any case, while its not perfect (to my eye) it is very much better than it was.

Thanks
