adjustable steering

How does the adjustable steering work on the early 100-6s?
 
Do you mean the front-to-back sliding and locking of the "adjustable" steering wheel on the steering shaft column or something else ?

If that is it, the back of the steering wheel hub has a collet with fingers that are internally splined and externally threaded. Around the fingers is a threaded clamping ring that closes the gaps between the fingers as the threads are "tightened".

The steering wheel and collet slide to and fro on an externally splined steering shaft.

When a comfortable steering wheel position (if there is one) is reached, the clamping ring is threaded "tighter" and the splined fingers firmly grasp the splined steering shaft.

If it's something esle.... I don't know.
 
OK, that's it - now, what keeps the hub from going all the way off of the steering shaft?

A circlip that attaches to the groove near the end of the steering column. Without it you may end up driving your car like W.C. Fields did in the movie "Bank Dick" only you might not be so lucky!!

Yep, I've got the circlip - I just couldn't beleive that that was all there was between me and the W C Fields imitation!

Me either! I think the next stop gap to keep the column from coming all the way out is the wiring harness running through the sterring column stator tube.

Yeah, that occured to me too. Well, if that's all there is, it must work...
