OK back to the first Q. Can I disassemble the Trans enough to check it out. Probably the answer is yes. Real question is can I put it back together. Should I?

Why not, as the book says, reassembly is just the reverse of disassembly.

Take your time, take photos, Bentley or Haynes book... it was designed and assembled by people with less technology than you've got in YOUR shop. Step-by-step, and you will KNOW what you have.

Feeler gauges and micrometers? Can't recall off the top if you may need a 1"~2" set of mic's... anyone else know?

Random thoughts are: a shopping bag is handy when disassembling the hubs (keeps the balls/springs from escape), an adjustable stainless band clamp (hose clamp) 3"~4" for reassembling same... a few small rubber bands... I think that covers the "speciality" tools.
