Hi, I'm doing the body work and prepping getting the aluminum shrouds ready for assembly on my 60 BT7, is the acid etch primer good for the aluminum parts? Thanks Bob:joyous:
Seems you have to paint over body filler. Eastwood has a forum and one post had problems with paint flaking over the primer. I see a problem with using filler on aluminum as most will not stick. Maybe a zinc primer then filler with a primer sealer then paint. Best I can do. Have done that in past. Etch aluminum with medium grade paper.
I use PPG's DP40LF epoxy on aluminum or steel . Do all your metal work and finish sand to 100 grit ( or lightly blast) to give the primer something to bite into. Clean thoroughly with paper towels and lacquer thinner. Let dry . Spray a couple good wet coats of the DP40LF primer , letting each coat flash off solvent . You want to spray primer wet for the best adhesion so use plenty of thinner and an HVLP gun at a lower pressure than you would spray color. You want good primer coverage of the bare metal part when dry. Let dry overnight and you can start working your filler . You have a 7 day window to apply filler or more primer without sanding the surface. You will cut through to bare metal when working your filler but you will eventually bury your all your filler and bodywork under another coat of the same primer . Let dry for a few days before you apply primer surfacer.
