Just read that Acer is buying Gateway for 710 million. The question that has come up is, will Acer continue the Gateway support as before? There seems to be some confusion on it's long term status.
 
PS; There's a lot of Gateway computers out there. If I owned one, I'd be very concerned about obtaining support for it in the future.
 
I've nothing bad to say about Acer's support. Quite the opposite. I think Gateway owners may be pleasantly surprised.

just purchased a 5220 acer, with more on it than my toshy had at 6 times the price 4 yrs ago, has a brilliant screen
 
I sell Acers, among others. I think they are a good value for the money.

All, that is, except the "designer" Ferrari one. That was just ~silly~.
 
I have or maintain 3 acer laptops and love all three. and I have 2 of their flatscreen monitors and can't say enough good things about them
 
I'm still lamenting when Gateway bought ALR(Advanced Logic Research), the maker of my then ALR Optima computer. I was on a first name basis with their techs. Of course, that was back in the toddler days of home computers. Tech support went out the window after that.

I kinda think Acer already bought Gateway, 2007.

Yup, finally! Dell ~claims~ to have a "naked" laptop but I never was able to nail one down. Acer wouldn't sell one either, they claim the warranty couldn't be honored with an "unknown" O/S loaded... now they install Ubuntu and warrant the unit. Kinda neat.
 
And cheaper over here than when loaded with basic vista, which seems to need a LOT of ram /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
 
Vista won't run "right" on anything under TWO GIG!!!

...and this from a guy who declared: "64Kb should be enuff for anyone."

The REAL bargain would be if they'd just get off the O/S merry-go-round and sell machines with nothin' but the BIOS. Let US decide what gets stuffed on 'em for an O/S.

I tried to get several of Toshiba's laptops for a client, now it's Vista instead of XP Pro. I was told we could "retro-fit" XP. For an additional FEE of course. I hear they're reconsidering that stand, XP will be in the MS lineup for a while yet. At least to the end of this year.

It's become madness.

Can retro mine back to xp, but still be running on vista base
 
You're dependent on apps that only run on 'Doze?

umm... "converted" to what? XP?

If the goal is an XP Pro O/S, my honest opinion is that it should be "scraped" of the Vista O/S and double-aught formatted. THEN load XP Pro from scratch. But you'll need to be prepared to call MS and argie th' toss as to the "legitimacy" of the product key.
 
Yes, ~but~... Kill all "automatic update" features or the first time it has access to a connection, it'll call the Mothership and rat ya out for using it on different (newer) hardware. Then ya gotta get a "Secret Code Key" from MS by callin' support and explaining it to a guy with an Indian accent who tells ya his name is Tony.
