About to pull the engine, some advice please

I'm about to pull the engine on my BN1 and intend to put it on an engine stand for the duration so that I can work on it and move it around the garage.

So my question is, is the engine end plate strong enough to take the weight of the engine on the stand or do I need to mount it via the block. If that is the case what bolt holes are available an what thread are they.

Make sure you have some muscle to help you with the removal. If you use grade 8 bolts to mount to the engine stand you'll be fine.

I manufactured some brackets with tubing attached, to bolt onto the engine mounting locations (like an old cannon with trunnions) and then made up a stand of two vertical posts on wheels with Vee tops so that the engine could 'balance ' on the top and could be rotated. It did need a few holes drilling to lock off the engine in the various positions using a surplus screwdriver as the pin.
