In the first place, isn't the very idea of a "Hall of Fame" out of kilter with the rebelliousness of R & R?

Full disclosure: I like ABBA.

Music from many artists can be hard to pin down in terms of style so I guess you have to decide if rock and roll is strictly "classic" rock by Led Zep, The Who and The Rolling Stones.....or if it's more of a "big tent"? (then again, is Reign O'er Me *really* rock and roll?)

To me, ABBA is a pop band, much like most of the early Beatles music (which I really like).
And in some sense , pop music is sort of a genre of rock and roll.
Even (in my opinion) disco is a form of rock and roll.

Bands like Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues can be hard to pin down as far as "style" or "type" is concerned but they're generally considered "rock". Lots of others are hard to classify too.

Anyway, whatever you want to call ABBA's music, who wouldn't like old ~Agnetha~ singing this?
(even with the sound turned "off" :jester: )

:iagree:

I'm with you, Nial. Their harmony and technique were always first rate. Glad they got the nod!

At one point, ABBA was the single largest "industry" in Sweden, or something to that effect. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, and they topped the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. ABBA remains a fixture of radio playlists and is one of the world's best-selling bands, having sold nearly 370 million records worldwide, making them the second best-selling band in history and the second best-selling pop artists in history. Sounds like reason enough for me.

There's like a nine part interview on youtube with Agnetha done within the last year or so, and when pinned down, she said that was her favorite ABBA song.

Edit: I'm also a fan of ABBA. Go scobe around on youtube and see (listen) to them sing their songs in other languages. Puts a different twist on things.

Yep - strange hearing a bunch of Vikings' descendants singing in perfect Spanish! But wonderful work!

I listen to the oldies station while driving the Midget. Ol' boy just had the "shame on the rock and roll hall of fame" weekend highlighting bands that should have gotten in but didn't. There were several that should have before ABBA. I'm not against them, there is just others who shoulda been there first.

I'll have to disagree. Heavy metal is heavy metal... Disco is disco...thus the term...disco. Which, IMO was only in the 70's and maybe EARLY 80's. I worked at a "club" that played popular dance music in the late 80's and some people called it a disco....which it wasn't.

.....Bee Gees is disco, The Cult isn't....

(although the doormen wore the cheesy tuxes and red ruffled front shirts. The owner was Columbian.)

( I hate the term club, especially now as you don't join anything and there are no memeber. I don't mind nightclub that much, just how "club" is thrown around now. "Awl nite up in da club dawg !!!". We always just said in the bar.)

IMO, everything that came out of the 60's should be considered "classic rock"...level of solidification may vary.

Trouble is, the "classifications" have changed greatly over the years, as have the playlists of radio stations. By your reckoning (and I don't really have a problem on it), we should consider everything from Lesley Gore to the Beach Boys to the Shirelles to Gene Pitney to Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas as "classic rock"; trouble is, the "classic rock" stations in my area would never think of playing any of those artists. Oddly, though, in the midst of Beatles, Zeppelin and AC/DC, they have no problem with the occasional Billy Joel or Don McLean or Elton John.

It's all very puzzling to someone like me, who grew up in the 1960s, when the "Top 40" stations played a much wider variety of musical genres.... :confuse:

At least the Hollies finally got in!

I'm with ya, but IMO, classic rock was more of an era. Like you said, they throw in stuff from left field. I'm not familar with the artist you mentioned, so I can't say anything about that, but you're right. I don't consider Tiny Tim a rock artist...but Jethro Tull is.. and the guy (Ian whats-his-face) played a flute. Matter of fact, didn't Tull win a heavy metal award in the 80's?

I thin it's just a matter of perception, like disco.

Same thing w/ "musclecars" I guess, it was an era, but everything made then wasn't a "musclecar".

(for the record, I HATE that term too.)

Yep, Ian Anderson & Co. won the first Heavy Metal Grammy in 1989. No one has ever figured out that gaffe! Tiny Tim? Well, novelty songs often hit the rock/pop charts back then (think New Vaudeville Band's 1966 smash hit "Winchester Cathedral" and its Grammy win), so.... Thing is, we all listened to it all and (c'mon now, admit it) loved "Winchester Cathedral" as much as "Eleanor Rigby" or "R-E-S-P-E-C-T"!

Agreeded so where would we put ELO? 10CC?

ELO I know, CCR I know, what is a 10CC?

I believe ELO is considered "soft or light rock"

Air Suply would be "air rock."

Like a said before, all are considered "rock", amount of solidity may vary.

James Taylor would be "sedimetary rock".

Even Don Ho would be considered "volcanic rock."

It appears there are no solid or concrere definitions of rock. :jester:

Can't figure out who would be "sheet rock."

Pet Shop Boys would be "pet rock" though.

Here's ABBA again, this time in German singing the song that basically got them started...

I feel that they are very talented and they produced a large number of really great songs. To find out that they did many of their songs in different languages was just icing on the cake.

Whether or not they deserve to be in the Rock & Roll hall of fame is really up to those giving the honors. Either way, they do deserve recognition for a decade of great music.

Maybe too good, I think that's why some folks have a problem with it. NO doubt they are VERY talented, wether you like 'em or not.

Only a decade? Thought they been doin' stuff longer than that.
