Aagh! Installing new trim ! What a pain!

Anyone have a clue how to install the rubber seals that go on the end post on the windshield to form the buffer between the vent window frame and the windshield frame. There is no way the part ( VB part 9-9326, page 50) will slide into the channel in the aluminium pillar. I've tried oil, grease, soap - you name it - and it will not slide in more than 1/4 of the way!
