We planted today. Thought you might enjoy some pics of the killdeer that has taken up residence in our plot. We just didn't have the heart to plow her over.

Would have done the same here Terri. that's neat. Got my little garden all tilled, planting very soon. Frost still very much an issue up here. ( one more freak snow isn't out of the picture either, but very unlikely)

This is the earliest we've planted in a couple of years. The Almanac said Friday was the last possible day of frost, let's hope so. Now, we need some rain. Grow little seeds, grow!

Terri, I find killdeer on ballasted roofs, because of the stone ballast looking like river banks. On a large industrial roof, I may see a hundred or more. When I get close to one, she will jump up and flop around and try to draw you away from the nest. Yours just sitting there is, in my experience, unusual.

She never left the nest. The male would fly down and pretend to be injured. He really spent his time trying to lure us outside the garden gate. She would occasionally leave, but when you came close to the eggs, she would hover over them with her wings spread out to "protect" them.
I hope all of our activity didn't scare them off. Maybe the eggs will hatch this week and we won't have to deal with them much longer!

Terri,

Is that you in the Black tshirt?
I'm in the same boat - we don't get around
to covering up the chimney that we don't
use,birds nest there.Annoying,but what are
you going to do?

That should bring all kinds of good karma to your garden.
Nice plot too. What all are ya'll planting?
I've prepared my garden for tilling and planting. Still too
soon for 'maters but it's almost past time for my taters.
Man, I love planting a garden. One of life's better activities.

We grow the normal stuff. Squash and zucchini, crowder peas, green beans, tomatoes, some more tomatoes, okra, sweet and hot peppers, asparagus, strawberries and blackberries. The fence in the center is for pole beans, but I went with bush beans this year. I think I'll line it with zinnias...just to make it "pretty"

I would love to find room for some eggplant. We usually do an early spring garden with lettuce, broccoli, greens and potatoes but we just couldn't get the time this year. We may try for the cool weather crops in September this year.

I agree with you about "one of life's better activities" I love garden time!!!

Mmmmmmm...early sinful pleasure : fried squash/zuc blossoms.
